Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time

Much was made of Illinois Senator Barack Obama's superb speech to a huge crowd of Iowa Democrats at the mid-November Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Des Moines. Without a doubt, it helped to propel Obama ahead of New York Senator Hillary Clinton in polls conducted in the weeks after the event.

But Obama's speech in November may not turn out to be the definitional statement of the fight for Iowa.

What could turn out to be the most critical comment of the campaign came from John Edwards in the last debate between the Democratic contenders — and the former senator from North Carolina may well claim the caucus-night victory that is the reward for delivering the right message at the right time.

It wasn't a great rhetorical flourish. It wasn't even a new statement.

Teacher accused of injuring student

A Cloverdale Middle School teacher is now without a job and facing accusations that he broke a student's hand during an altercation in the classroom.

Special education teacher Scott W. Porter, 31, is accused of grabbing 15-year-old Jordan Mundy by the shirt and wrestling him to the ground, somehow breaking the student's index finger and possibly causing permanent damage to his hand.

The alleged incident occurred shortly after the start of school on Jan. 11, during an anger management class that Porter was teaching to emotionally disabled children at the middle school.

The student's mother, Michelle Britton of Cloverdale, told the BannerGraphic that her son and another boy were making fun of the teacher's height and that the teacher became upset and challenged the boys to "come up there and say it to his face."

When the two students approached the teacher at his desk and then tried to run away, the teacher allegedly grabbed Mundy and held him on the ground in a wrestling lock, Britton said.

Rather than sweating glycemic index, stick to the basics

If you pick up a box of Lean Cuisine Chicken Pomodoro in Australia, you'll find a small symbol on the label that lists the product's glycemic index in addition to the usual facts about calories, carbohydrates, fat, protein and sodium. About 150 other products carry the symbol, too.

Developed nearly 30 years ago at the University of Toronto, the glycemic index, or GI, is becoming part of the nutritional landscape Down Under. And it's attracted attention in the U.S. and Canada, too.

The GI tries to gauge how much your blood sugar is likely to rise after eating a particular food. The higher the number, the more likely your blood sugar will be elevated after eating – something people need to avoid. Foods with scores of 70 to 100 are considered high-glycemic; 55 and lower are low-glycemic.

Senate Panel Rebukes Craig Over Sex Sting

Your claims to the court ... to the effect that your guilty plea resulted from improper pressure or coercion, or that you did not, as a legal matter, know what you were doing when you pled guilty do not appear credible," the letter said.

Kevin Richert, the editorial page editor of the Idaho Statesman, told CBS Radio News he is curious to see how this will play out back in Craig's home state.

"There arent any really new allegations or new revelations but in this case it's coming from the senator's colleagues on Capitol Hill so it will be interesting to see how much weight Idahoans attach to that," Richert said.

The panel also said Craig should have received permission from the ethics panel before using campaign funds to pay his legal bills. Craig, who is not running for re-election, has spent more than $213,000 in campaign money for legal expense and public relations work in the wake of his arrest and conviction last summer.

Fat no more, patients turn out for sex-life boost

It was just what the doctor ordered – an hour of talk about sex.

Last Thursday evening, 18 local women gathered to compile a list of what they find sexy, from candles and jazz to "my legs," "kisses on the ear" and firemen. Then they examined dozens of sex toys and bought a few.

The women squirmed and giggled at times, but they didn't shirk from the evening's activities, sponsored by their doctors at the N.E.W. Program surgical weight-loss center in Newport Beach.

Rethinking Organics

Few things make you feel better about your health than eating organic fruits and veggies. A diet high in produce is commendable enough, but organic produce? That's a double dose of virtue. What's less clear is how much good that virtue does you. Are there real benefits to going organic? If so, are some organic fruits and vegetables better than others? And how do you choose?

One thing is certain: it's easier than ever to find organic produce. As demand for pesticide- and chemical-free foods has grown, the onetime niche product has gone mass market. Sometimes organic produce simply looks or tastes better, which for me is often reason enough to pay the higher price it may sell for. And sure, it makes sense to avoid pesticides as much as possible. At the same time, scientists have yet to document a definite, long-term negative effect of modern pesticides on our bodies, meaning that while organic foods do you no harm, they may not turn out to be as beneficial as you think.
