Kearsarge strike group heading back to Va.

The USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group and its 6,000 sailors and Marines are sailing back to Virginia.

The Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship and its strike group have been on a nearly six-month deployment. Part of Kearsarge's deployment included helping cyclone victims in Bangladesh.

The Navy announced Tuesday the USS Porter, a guided-missile destroyer, and the Carr, a guided-missile cruiser, will return Friday to Norfolk.

The Ponce, an amphibious transport dock ship, and the Gunston Hall, a dock landing ship from Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach, will pull in next Tuesday.

The Kearsarge is scheduled to arrive pierside on February 1st.

One Woman's World

If Dobbs agrees, I'll walk 10 paces behind him, carry his briefcase, sharpen his pencils and write his speeches. If he doesn't agree, we, the people, better start begging, praying, scratching and scrambling to find somebody else brave enough to kick two slick political machines to the curb, climb over the stench and the debris, and occupy the Oval Office.

Dobbs has raised the ordinary American citizen's awareness of "broken borders; broken government" more than any 10 of his news equivalents. He is deeply concerned and outraged over the political rape of middle-class folks like Johnny Johnson and Sally Smith. He says what he thinks and emotes what he feels.

I daresay the repulsive and demonic political machines would find some legal loophole for keeping Dobbs confined to his commentary cubicle -- or anyone else who smells of spring air and might be considered a threat to the stagnation that is today's foul federal government.

Not meant to be a joke

At least I didn't think it was,'' said John Unger II, D-Berkeley, chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Committee members were expressing their respect for Sen. Frank Deem, a Republican from Wood County, when it amended a resolution naming the new bridge over Blennerhassett Island the J. Frank Deem Blennerhassett Island Bridge, Unger said. The committee was recognizing Deem's tenure as a lawmaker and one of the top 10 longest-serving legislators in the country, Unger said. Deem has served in the Legislature in every decade since the 1950s. ‘‘That's a pretty good accomplishment,'' said Unger, who didn't return calls on Friday. Unger's description is different than Sen. Evan Jenkins', D-Cabell, vice chairman of the committee, who on Friday said the amendment to the original resolution, which asks the highways commissioner to name the bridge the Blennerhassett Island Bridge, to add Deem to the title of the bridge was in jest.

USDA Recommends That Food From Clones Stay Off the Market

The Food and Drug Administration has concluded that milk and meat from cloned animals, such as these cows, should be allowed on the market. That stance has raised a debate over whether food from clones that are raised organically could still carry the organic label. (PRNewsFoto/ViaGen) .

Legoland proposal topples

But state and local officials have resisted the plan because of the amount of tax incentives requested, according to news reports.

RED Development proposed a $539 million Legoland in Lee's Summit with about a third of the cost being covered by tax incentives. That plan has stagnated. The company previously proposed a plan in the $800-million range for Olathe. But local officials balked at the prospect of as much as two-thirds of the costs being covered by public money.

There are four Legolands in the world, only one of which is in the United States. The theme parks utilize the concept of the plastic building-block toys to create interactive play areas and rides marketed for children between the ages of 2 and 12.

In 1999, the 128-acre Legoland California opened.

Jury-rigged, jerry-built: Maybe a problem?

The word had popped up the week before in The New York Times Magazine article, "The Sleep-Industrial Complex," all about the mattress and pharmaceutical industries. The piece included a reference to a man who was such an enthusiast for Sleep Number Beds that he "jury-rigged something similar for his bulldog." On the subject of exactly how the dog expressed its preference for a particular Sleep Number, the author was silent.

Jury-rigging is a term with nautical origins. "Rig" is one of those little words so short that it contains nearly infinite meanings (an early form of nanotechnology). One of its meanings is "the arrangement of masts, sails, etc., on a vessel."

In the days of the tall ships, when a vessel on the high seas lost a mast in a storm or a battle, the ship's carpenter would fashion what was known as a jury mast from spare parts down in the hold.
