| Boca vet clinic sued after toy poodle suffers burns during teeth ...
Five-year-old Molly went in for a routine teeth cleaning and left with burns to her belly that took months to heal. Now the owner of Molly, a toy poodle, is suing Calusa Veterinary Center in Boca Raton, alleging negligence and infliction of emotional distress. Two years ago, Delray Beach resident Sandy Alexander dropped Molly off at the vet for the teeth cleaning and was told when she returned that the poodle may have developed sensitivity to the heating pads used during the procedure. .

Lenders Step Up Effort to Avert Foreclosures
Under the latest plan, dubbed Project Lifeline, the lenders promise to seek contact with homeowners who are 90 or more days overdue on their mortgages. In some cases, homeowners will be given the chance to "pause" their foreclosure for 30 days while lenders try to work out a way to make the loans affordable. Lenders could begin sending letters to these borrowers as soon as this week. Homeowners wouldn't qualify for the program if they are in bankruptcy, if they already have a foreclosure date within 30 days or if the loan was for an investment or vacant property. Unlike the plan announced in December to freeze interest rates at current levels on certain adjustable-rate loans, this latest effort is to involve all kinds of home loans, not just subprime mortgages, a higher-cost variety for people with blemished credit records or high debt in relation to income.
The gospel according to Mavis
One of the original voices of the civil rights movement is keeping Martin Luther King jnr's dream alive, writes Patrick Donovan. Ry Cooder doesn't produce CDs for just anyone, but when the legendary gospel singer Mavis Staples came knocking, he couldn't refuse. After all, her father, Roebuck "Pops" Staples, was a mentor to the instrumentalist, best known for orchestrating projects such as the Buena Vista Social Club sessions and the Paris, Texas soundtrack. "When Ry came in," says Staples, 67, "he went straight to the amplifier and ran his hand across it, saying 'Wow, Pop Staples's amplifier'. He plugged his guitar in and as soon as he started strumming and tuning up just as Pops did, I said 'Lord, I'm gonna have a good time'." Staples was in the studio to record a new album called We'll Never Turn Back, a collection of songs about the American civil rights movement.
Locals Bristle at Lawyers' Refinery Ads
Savannah Fire Capt. Todd Heil said crews found another body Wednesday in the second-floor break room. The fire has killed seven people and left an eighth missing. Authorities said they were confident the final body would be found soon. The victims' names haven't been released. Even with the search continuing and the smoke still rising, trial lawyers began trolling for plaintiffs. Mark & Associates, a law firm with offices in New York and Boston, grabbed the http://www.sugarrefineryexplosion.com domain and outfitted the site with details of the blast, links to news updates and a form where victims can share their information with the firm's attorneys. Dallas lawyer Jeffrey D. Slakter's full-page ad in Wednesday's Savannah Morning News includes details of Imperial's financial status - net sales of more than $875 million.
One gladiator nation, with Justice for all
Trying to focus on the task at hand, it's clear no gladiator's prefight ritual should include such sour emotions. I've always wanted to sucker punch a 6-8, 300-pound guy with a mohawk, so I'm pleased to learn that I'll be battling Justice (Justice Smith) and doing my damage on the pyramid, one of the returning classics, where contestants must elude a gladiator in scaling a padded 40-foot tall pyramid. Nobody ever triumphs in this event because the gladiator is given higher ground. Whatever. As far as I'm concerned, Justice is a walking keg of tree sap, even if this keg says things like, "I have fun hitting people hard," and, "How tall are you again?" and "Whoooo!" Justice's ramblings are prohibiting me from entering into my mental zone. So is Wolf's incessant chirping: "Remember, you'll be falling 40 feet.
Energy Independence Is Stupid (Updated)
Instead everyone wants the costs to go and at same time the demand to decrease. Politically need to link security, economics, climate change, and Apple Pie together and put a surcharge on non-renewable energy supplies and redirect that money into renewables. And understand it will take time (as in a decade or two) to make a sizable shift. True energy independence might be obtainable but not in my lifetime. We can certainly make very significant reductions in oil imports if we wished but political will has not been there. .
