| Felony DUI hits (another) roadblock -- a big one...
But parks supporters argued against kissing off the $3 million a year that the fees raise for things like grafitti-scrubbing, maintenance and cleaning restrooms. One of the few voices against lifting the fee was Sen. Ken Jacobsen, D-Seattle. Thirty seven other states have similar park fees, he said, and Washington already has a budget-minded pass for families: for $50 a year, they park as much as they want at as many state parks as they want. Four years from now, he predicts, the state will reverse itself. "I bet you $100 to one I'm going to be right," Jacobsen told the lawmakers who voted to do away with the fee. "You're going to be wrong." .

New GNC president hopes to get company into shape
Almost a decade ago, then-Rite Aid executive Beth J. Kaplan came to the Sixth Avenue offices of General Nutrition Centers to make a deal to juice up hundreds of drugstores with vitamin-packed GNC departments. In the years since, that partnership has survived, even as the two retailers underwent management changes, ownership shifts and, in Rite Aid's case, a messy accounting scandal. Ms. Kaplan, 49, is a survivor, too. She left the Camp Hill drugstore chain in the midst of an upheaval that eventually would see the chairman sentenced to jail time. She moved on to be a venture capitalist and then spent a few years at the Bath & Body Works chain. Now, she's back for another dose of health supplements. Last month, she was named GNC's president and chief merchandising and marketing officer.
Obama: $60M in February?
A couple of notes. First, I wouldn't be surprised to see the $140 average go up this month. People give more as the stakes go up. I'm sure he is also getting some “frontrunner" money he wasn't getting before. I wouldn't be surprised if the total would up being $70 million. Also, thanks to an interesting quirk in the way the Obama website publicly records donations — batch uploading donations from made from the email fundraising link at once — it's possible to separate out donations made from email from those that organically come in on the Web site. Both e-mails I tracked seemed to generate about 36,000 contributions, or somewhere between $3.5 and $4 million. So, even without any momentum-generating primary victories (in fact, there are none left this month), all the Obama campaign would need to do is send 3 or 4 more emails to their list to reach $60 million.
The Love Guru's Karma is Huge!
The new poster for Mike Myers comedy The Love Guru has come online. Opening June 20, the Paramount pic co-stars Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Ben Kingsley, Meagan Good, John Oliver, Verne Troyer, Romany Malco and Jim Gaffigan. In the film, Pitka (Myers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus. He moves back to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle a rift between Toronto Maple Leafs star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Malco) and his estranged wife. After the split, Roanoke's wife starts dating L.A. Kings star Jacques Grande (Timberlake) out of revenge, sending her husband into a major professional skid -- to the horror of the teams' owner Jane Bullard (Alba) and Coach Cherkov (Troyer).
The Healthy way to make profits
Eat healthy and snack smart, is the mantra of busy consumers today. Health food is in and junk is fading out. In tune with global trend, Indian FMCG companies are focussing on the health & wellness food segment to bring in the moolah, finds out Chanda P Kumar. .
Lindsay Lohan Gets Naked For Marilyn Monroe
I called it on this blog when I wrote that Lindsay Lohan is the next Hollywood Sex Goddess, if she choices to be. I compared her to Monroe, who remains the benchmark when assessing sex appeal, and volupuousness. In fact Lohan is even better than Monroe was. She has a radiant, healthy aspect that Monroe, (a victim of chronic sexual abuse as a young teen), lacked, even at the height of her popularity. Lindsay Lohan has everything, and she will become a very good actress. Monroe's early movies were practically unwatchable. She grew as she experiented with different roles. Lindsay Lohan will too. She is only 21, and has lots of time to develop as an actress. She is already a sex goddess, a radiant, stunning, outrageous beauty. Madonna, move over. Lindsay has arrived. (I refer to the cover of New York Magazine this week, February 18, 2008).
Jack and Lynny Huston: Pray for Jerusalem
Before our leadership breathes life into this modern-day monster, let's look at a work of nonfiction called the Bible. The Creator gave a piece of real estate called Israel to the Jewish people. The earnest money was faith. Metes and bounds were from a burning bush in Egypt to some tall cedars in Lebanon, and from sandy beaches on the Mediterranean to 12 stones under the Jordan River. Time of possession was same day. These terms are forever. Don't forget to read the fine print, specifically where it states that God will bless those who bless the Jewish people and curse those who curse the Jewish people. Now look at financing options. Let's not subprime Israel and the Jewish people, or the Almighty will reset his A.R.M. on us while our nation slides into foreclosure.
Should we buy Michael Pollan's nutritional Darwinism?
Adam and Eve must have been a healthy pair. They got some exercise, ate lots of locally grown fruits and vegetables, and while they may not have been thin by today's fashion standards, they certainly weren't ashamed of their bodies. Now look what's happened: In just 6,000 years, we've abandoned their sensible eating habits for a high-fat, sugar-loaded diet, and turned ourselves into a nation of lard-asses. Goodbye Garden of Eden; hello Olive Garden. Whence our fall from grace? According to Michael Pollan's essay in last Sunday's New York Times Magazine, the serpent wears a lab coat. For decades scientists have been analyzing the food we eat, breaking it down into component parts, and studying how each nutrient affects our health in controlled conditions. More often than not, the "expert advice" that emerged from this work did more harm than good, it seems.
