Author wants San Antonians to get fit
A San Antonio fitness buff and author is taking his message public this month, launching a campaign to get more people to make exercise part of their daily routine. Bob Brinkmann is a man on a mission, and he practices what he preaches. After a lifelong love affair with fitness and 20 years in the Army, he wrote the book "Fitness Timer," a daily log and manual to keep exercise top of mind. It has information on everything from strength training to nutrition. "I do believe very strongly in health and fitness," Brinkmann said. "I like everyone around me to be fit. I find that people are happier and they can do a lot more activities, not only as a family, but individually as well." Brinkmann has partnered with local gyms like Lifetime Fitness and Sports and Nutrition stores.

Morning Report: B-E-A-G-L-E-S!
Yes, it's time for the Westminster Dog Show once again. The crowd-pleasing beagle named Uno barked at his handler in Madison Square Garden last night, then bayed at the crowd, tried to grab his leash and took a flying leap at a piece of filet mignon. Oh, and he gnawed away at a newly printed sign. His white-tipped tail in perpetual motion, Uno turned the green carpet of Madison Square Garden into his own personal backyard last night when he became the first beagle to win the hound group at the Westminster Kennel Club show since 1939 - that's 483 years, in dog years. Westminster has presented best in show 100 times and a beagle has never won. Uno's victory assured him a place in the final seven tonight at America's No. 1 dog event. Beagles are always among the most popular dogs in the country, yet Uno's handler Aaron Wilkerson was at a loss to explain why they've never done better here.
Beware of Oversimplifications - Health And Wellness
In their desire to make sense out of health information, people often oversimplify the truth. For example, potato chips have long been reputed as a junk food. Actually the quick cooking process of potato chips preserves its nutrients better than mashed, boiled, or baked potatoes. Ounce per ounce, potato chips provide more nutrients than other forms of potatoes. However, because potato chips are cooked in oil, they are high in fat and calories and are not recommended for people trying to lose weight. By being aware that the truth is not simple for most health issues, the tendency to oversimplify and over generalize health information can be thwarted. Health Discoveries Take Time .
Brazil Cuts a Rhode Island Worth of Amazon or Much More in 3 Months
During the gathering, which should count on the participation of several other ministers, the government is supposed to discuss measures to strengthen inspection in places that are considered more critical. According to the executive secretary of the Environment Ministry, Joo Paulo Capobianco, municipalities such as So Felix do Xingu and Cumaru do Norte, both in Par state, and Colmiza, in Mato Grosso, traditionally show high deforestation rates. Numbers The area deforested in the Amazon between August and December 2007 can be twice as big as the 3,235 square kilometers announced by the Environment ministry. The number discrepancy can be explained by the differences between two forest monitoring systems. According to the Inpe's director, Gilberto Cmara, the preliminary data do not reflect the whole devastation occurred in the region.
Glare of Clemens case reflects on Yankees
He was the greatest pitcher of his time, and a mainstay of the team that dominated what now is called baseball's steroid era. In five seasons starting when he was 36 years old - an age when most players are washed up or retired - he won 77 games for the New York Yankees, pitched them into two World Series, and won an unprecedented sixth Cy Young Award as best pitcher in the American League. But now, under oath and before a panel of skeptical lawmakers, superstar Roger Clemens, 45, must put his own reputation - and that of the Yankees as well - under scrutiny. Labeled a drug cheat by former Sen. George Mitchell's report on steroids in baseball and served with a congressional subpoena, Clemens is slated to testify Wednesday in Washington before the House Oversight Committee's hearing on steroid use in baseball.
BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept
Yesterday, DailyTech reported on VW's intention to bring a diesel-electric hybrid Golf to market. The hybrid powertrain would boost fuel economy to nearly 70 MPG on the small two/four-door hatchback. BMW also has diesel-electric hybrids on the brain with its new Vision EfficientDynamics concept vehicle. The concept is based on the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Variable Twin Turbo diesel engine. The diesel motor develops 204 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the previous BMW X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle which was a full hybrid, the Vision EfficientDynamics is a mild-hybrid vehicle. A 15kw generator boosts total power to 221 HP, while regenerative braking steps in to help power the vehicle's electrical systems and recharge the rear-mounted lithium-ion battery pack.
