Man Indicted in Noose Display at Jena Six Rally

A man was indicted on federal hate crime and conspiracy charges in connection with threatening marchers at a civil rights rally during which nooses were displayed on the back of a pickup truck, U.S. Attorney Donald Washington said.

Jeremiah Munsen, 18, and another individual allegedly conspired to intimidate African-American demonstrators at the Sept. 20 rally, crafting two nooses out of extension cords, attaching them to the back of the vehicle and repeatedly driving slowly by a group of marchers waiting at a bus depot to return to Tennessee, officials said.

Six teens, known as the Jena Six, were arrested after a December 2006 attack on a white student, Justin Barker, at Jena High School.

The case drew national attention, with civil rights leaders decrying the severity of the charges against the teens.

Letter From a Young American

I watched as the passion and hope of the sixties evaporated into the hopelessness of the seventies and the BIG LIE of the eighties. I know your anger. It is an energy that can and must be harnessed. Let the old politics of privilege and power end with the election of President Obama. We the people can make this happen with our $25, and $50 donations. If you're tired of the Insurance companies, banks and oil companies; argi-businesses, wall street tycoons and the ultra rich running this country for their own benefit - give what you can, do what you can but most of all say who you are. Talk about this movement at church, at work, in your neighborhood. Put your reputation on the line. Stand up and be counted. We can retake this nation for the people and make it an agent of change in the world.

Oy vey! Bat mitzvah photographer accused of stealing guest's purse

Sometime between the DJ playing "Hava Nagila" and "Last Dance" at a recent bat mitzvah party, the professional photographer allegedly stopped snapping pictures and got sticky fingers.

Steve Raab, 60, of Huntingdon Valley, allegedly stole a guest's black felt purse and apparently used a credit card it contained to pay for gas and dog food, Montgomery County authorities say.

Now, county prosecutors want to know if Raab, who specializes in weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs and other festivities, has stolen other items while at work.

So far, there are no indications that Raab has stolen before, said Assistant District Attorney Steven Latzer.

Raab and his wife, Susan, 63, were arrested Friday and charged with theft, criminal conspiracy and other charges.

NASA extends shuttle mission by one day

While the U.S. space agency refrained from commenting on the nature of the illness or whom it afflicted, ESA officials revealed some details earlier today on their blog chronicling Atlantis' mission to deliver the European Columbus laboratory to the ISS.

"Hans Schlegel went into space in perfect health condition," wrote Volker Damann, head of the ESA's Crew Medical Support Office, in mission update posted to the blog. "However, he has developed a condition that is neither life threatening nor does it impact the health of other crew members — but is currently not compatible with a space walk."

ESA officials said they were confident Schlegel would be ready for the second of three planned spacewalks for Atlantis' STS-122 mission. That spacewalk, also to be performed alongside Walheim, is now scheduled for Wednesday.

Reviews of all the latest DVD releases

Fast Food Nation (15), new on DVD from Tartan Video. Fast Food Nation is a revolting film, a truly revolting film, a film which looks at America's fast-food industry from every aspect and finds it grossly wanting in each. From the corrupt executives who cover up poor food-processing to the immigrant workers bullied and maimed in the factories, it offers a stomach-churning picture of mass food production for instant gratification. Excrement makes its way into the burgers; workers' limbs are ripped off; and so too are the consumers, unaware of the gruesome processes which lie behind the smiling face of the big companies who churn out such filth. The film pulls no punches. The film of animals being slaughtered and disembowelled will doubtless increase veggie numbers. But does the film work? Just about yes, but there is scope for plenty of reservations.

Honoring Zindler with matzo balls

On March 2, the memory of Channel 13's Marvin Zindler, arguably the most famous, most influential and inarguably most beloved TV personality in Houston history, will be celebrated and rejoiced ... with a big matzo-ball-eating contest at Kenny & Ziggy's delicatessen.

Sounds just about right to me. Marvin knew his way around a deli menu.

Around, upside down and inside out. And soup was one of his favorites.

World champion eater Joey Chestnut will compete in the "Matzoh Balls for Marvin" food fight. Chestnut is best known for dethroning the Japanese eating machine Kobayashi last July 4 in Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Contest on ESPN. Chestnut downed a record-shattering 66 franks and buns in 12 minutes. Last summer, Chestnut broke the kolache-eating record by gobbling 56 sausage-filled pastries at Minute Maid Park.

Black Tide proves you're never too young to rock

Black Tide's fans swarmed Internet message boards demanding that the judgment be reversed. And then a miracle occurred: Ozzfest's organizers asked the band to open the main stage, and it rocked the crowd accordingly.

Such have been the formative years for Florida's Black Tide, a quartet that merges classic rock with a modern style. Debut album "Light From Above" (Interscope, March 18) reflects the influence of such genre heavyweights as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, whose catalog is older than Black Tide's members. In fact, guitarist/lead singer Gabriel Garcia just turned 15.

Black Tide's youth hasn't hindered its progress, which has been swift. The band formed just a few years ago and picked up a demo deal with Atlantic before signing with Interscope in 2006. Its triumph at Ozzfest indicated a victory on another level.
