| FDA issues ANPRM to revise mandatory nutrients
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) in the Federal Register, Docket No. 2006N-0168, titled Food Labeling: Revision of Reference Values and Mandatory Nutrients. The ANPRM requests comments on what new reference values the agency should use to calculate the percent daily value (DV) in the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels and what factors the agency should consider in establishing such new reference values. In addition, FDA requests comments on whether it should require that certain nutrients be added or removed from the Nutrition Facts and Supplemental Facts labels. Current rules concerning DV have been in effect since 1993. Those rules were developed on diet and health information that was current at the time.

The trouble started when the girl, working in the house as domestic help for some time, said she had picked the money after she was shown live wires by the owner of the house on Thursday. The owner had found Rs 35,000 missing from a wad of notes worth Rs 50,000. The finger of suspicion was pointed at the girl, who was slapped and confined to a room besides being intimidated till her aunt was summoned. When her aunt arrived on the scene, she was told that the girl had taken away Rs 35,000. They were told to return the money. When the poor family could not do so, the police was informed. The police then picked up Tikka Ram, who was told to produce the money. When he was being allegedly tortured, his family sent a message back home in Uttar Pradesh to sell their land to repay the money and get Tikka Ram released.

USDA hold on beef has little impact on PBC schools
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's administrative hold on ground beef processed by the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. had little impact on Palm Beach County schools. "School menus were only affected one day," said a news release issued by the county School District. Lori Dornbusch, assistant director of site-based operations, said a "sparse" number of schools had to substitute chicken, turkey or other federally acceptable food item for beef on one day. She said she did not know if any schools in Boca Raton or Delray Beach were affected. USDA placed an administrative hold on all Hallmark/Westland products because of potential violations of regulatory requirements and contractual terms as a supplier of products to the federal food and nutrition programs.
